There is wonderful software for this called Rosetta Stone that is widely acclaimed. It is available in many languages, including English.
When I needed to learn Spanish, I began with the software, then purchased two copies of a book by Paulo Coehlo entitled "The Alchemist" - one copy in Enlgish, and one copy in Spanish. I choose Coehlo because his works are not complicated in their wording, and they are translated into just about every language you can imagine! So I read about four or five of his books, first in Spanish then in English. At first, I could only go a few Spanish sentences at a time before needing to read the English. But before I knew it, I could read and comprehend near an entire chapter in Spanish without the English (although I did read the English as well to be safe).
That worked for me. The important thing is to find something that feels like "hey, this is working for me" and just keep doing it. Keep making progress and maintaining a real interest in what you're learning.
