As for this specific case, I would deem that question as "related," but not a duplicate. I've cast my reopen vote. As for your general question: Should I pre-empt claims of being a duplicate by linking to an existing ELU question and explaining how it is not a duplicate? I think that's always a good idea, for several reasons: It shows you've done ...

Well spotted. I have closed the question as a duplicate of the one Mr. Shiny and New lank to. (Any rule for pronouncing “e”?)

The new question is an exact duplicate of How do I pluralize a name ending in “y”? If you think a more thorough answer is warranted then by all means, write one for the old question. Or if you think one is needed but don't know enough to write one yourself (or lack the time), then a bounty can be started on the old question.

My immediate thoughts: The very first pair I got were two very clearly unrelated questions that had nothing whatsoever to do with each other—same as what several others have noted. I suspect they were matched because of an overlap in words used in the body of the questions themselves. The problem is that one of the questions is just one sentence long, ...

To add to tchrist’s answer, since the question is a general question about procedure... You can (and probably should) edit the question to make clear why it’s not answered by the nominated duplicate. I saw Question X which seems superficially similar, but all the answers there talk about hewages whereas this question is actually asking about flurbles. ...

I’ve gone ahead and reöpened the question for you because I could not see how the would-be duplicate could be considered such, and there was no explanation posted by the closer. My feeling is that when you would like a closed question reöpened, it’s usually better to raise the matter on Meta, presenting a persuasive case for that action, than it is to flag ...

Ouch—that really shouldn't have happened. I didn't notice the original question was closed, so that one is reopened now. As for whether or not they're duplicates or not—while they're not literally duplicates, I believe they are sufficiently the same question, which is why I voted to close it. I don't feel that strongly about it, so if the community wants to ...

Thanks for your work on this project! Thoughts so far (I think I've done around 30 of these): What is the intended use of "Related, not duplicates"? I mentioned this in a comment, but I don't think I had enough space to explain clearly. There are four options available: "No duplicates" "Duplicate of" (can go either direction) &...

As promised, the question pairs now load faster -- on average -- than they did last weekend. Sometimes the next pair loads quickly, and sometimes there is a long delay. If all the questions loaded as quickly as the quickest, giving Melbourne feedback would be easy and fun, but enough still load very slowly so that one needs an alternate task to turn to ...
